I decided to experiment with plasticine. The thought was that I could use this medium to experiment with shapes. I could hopefully create miniature versions of what I desired to carve out on the snowbank.
What I purchase is actually called Plastalina which is offered at Michaels--I always try to take advantage of their coupon. You can pull the coupon up on your phone from their simple phone app. Colours that will keep your hands un-stained include: Black White Tan Brown Apparently, making a small model like this is a typical step for sculptors. I have learned that the model is called a maquette and it can be super helpful in getting the proportions right on the final snow sculpture. In Italian, the model is called a bozetto. I tried using a maquette for the first time in January of 2016 and it was a big help. The plasticine becomes frozen as I stand outside holding it in my left hand. But don't forget to wear the warmest gloves you can find while carving! Below please find pictures of my plasticine advenures with the newest pictures loaded at the top. |

Late fall, 2021 plastalina experiments...
Earlier plastalina experiments!
Did you see the charicature of Einstein? I'm guessing you found him!
Second, notice that most of my early creations had no ears! Ears came later.....
And that second last one shows how much I needed to learn about eyes!
Will you grab some plastalina and give it a try?
